Resolved Limit on characters and lines?

I often use the limit of words in text and it works fine. But can I also limit the characters or lines?
I've put this in now:
  {$ TEXT | truncate: 80}

But it only works on words and not on characters.

Hi Ellen,

Any change to a variable, like the truncate function is done by Smarty. The page I send provides all the modifiers for the truncate function. Since you never know the line length you can't limit to that....

You knew what to look for, I did not.
Thank you very much, but unfortunately did not solve my problem.
There is nothing with limit on lines either.
