Hi,
I have been using F2C for a long time now and have many content types and plugins. (Note I don't have a current subscription) I am preparing for migration to Joomla 4 and so far have a working site with most of the components I need - it has been a steep learning curve converting my extensions with little documentation available.

I am wondering when you expect the new version of F2C to be ready and would be happy to test a beta version for you. I would be your first customer for the new version :)

Hi Rudolf,

We will be adding an official statement soon on the website that we will not be making a Joomla 4 version of Form2Content. There are several reasons for this (difficult) decision after more than 10 years of development.

The most important one is the combination of time versus (often) undocumented changes in Joomla. We have always had the philosophy to "stick to the core" but that has drained our energy too.

Joomla has developed a great deal and with the maturity of custom fields our niche in the market has become a lot smaller also.This and our lack of time for development and marketing means that we have to make a huge jump to catch up to the expectations of a quality Joomla extension. Time we sadly no longer have.

We will be releasing all our code so any other keen developer can continue the work or branche it in any way. Sorry to disappoint you but I hope you understand that sadly all nice things come to an end at some point.

Hi Helen, I will be discussing the Joomla 4 version of Form2Content with Julien. As you might be aware we are both doing this on the side and with the continuous (often undocumented) changes in Joomla it has been much work just maintaining.
Our (my) goal is to get a stable version for J4 but we most likely won't be developing new features due to lack of time (and sales). It's mostly a goodwill project now.

I just need to clarify - we have been using Form2Content for about 8 years (EasySoftware / Minion).

We have developed our own applications that support this application:
- Component - Import articles from XML into Form2Content
- Module - EasySlideshow Articles (filtering, related, ...)
- Plugin - Content to Form2Content

Thanks to that, we have several hundred sites using only Form2Content.
I have been seeing that for a long time now, development has been slow for new versions of Joomla !, I do not currently see a version for J3.9

Edit: I'm wrong, the version 6.17.4 is for J3.9.X ?

Did I understand correctly that further development on J4 will no longer take place?

I am currently preparing another 4 websites and 3 e-shops - completed in January 2021 and I would like to create professional products with the possibility of upgrade.

Sorry to read your explanation why F2C isn't upgraded to J4.
I have been using F2C for several websites and years now and really like it. Was hoping that it will be ported to J4 as well.
I can understand your choice about not to continue the development anymore.

For example, when I took over Email Manager from the manufacturer, which ended the development, the upgrade to J3 cost me a total of about 300 hours of programming.

I understand that this is probably not the main reason, but it is also a significant part?

Hi Tom, Rudolf,

The amount of work is a lot but it's also frustrating. We rely closely on Joomla core and use it for instance for our UI. There are many changes made without documentation resulting in a loss in time on our part figuring things out (time and again). So yes, it's a lot of work but also this time can't be used to develop the actual features of F2C itself and integrations with new J4 features.

Hi Patrick,

And, would it be feaseable just to port F2C from J3 to J4 and that's it? No new features, only an upgrade?
To cover the time/costs for you; people have to buy a new license for it.
For me it would be the solution, I have multiple sites running F2C.

This is really a shame; I use it on 2 websites and cannot find a real alternative to F2C.
You have a unique product: adding content in a safe and simple way in the frontend and adding standard Joomla articles with controlled layout via intelligent templating. There must be a (large) market for this, it must be possible to sell it. In any case, I am willing to keep paying for it. Please review your decision.

I also cannot find another alternative. I have now ported 4 components to J4 and it is hard and frustrating work, and that is just making them J4 compatible without rewriting to use the new MVC.
I quite understand why you feel unable to port F2C to J4 and so have started the process myself, but with such a complex component it will take a considerable investment of my time.

I can understand the decision to stop the development. A hard decision to take! I would like to thank Patrick and his team for their effort, and the wonderful product they have given us.

As long as Joomla 3 is maintained (two years after Joomla 3.10 will be released) we can still use Form2Content on our Joomla our websites, I guess.

I can see some different scenarios for the future:

A. all together we can raise some money to secure the development
B. another firm will take over the development of Form2Content
C. a group of skilled developers will adopt Form2Content as an opensource project
D. a group concerned users will find alternatives for Form2Content together

Please share your thoughts!

I think the future steps are up to Patrick and his team to suggest options.

I remember when Chill Creations from the Netherlands ended the development of the CCVaom application, we are (EasySoftware) offered us an application to buy, including all customers and subscriptions.

I don't know what Patrick will choose here. But it is true that it would be appropriate to maintain the current version of Form2Content for J3 for 2 years after the release of the latest version.

But if subscriptions are already stopped, I don't know if there will be enough money and will to continue to maintain updates and resolve conflicts, maintain forums, documentation, websites.
It's still just expenses without income.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your thoughts, understanding and appreciation.

Although I have to discuss it with Julien I believe we will maintain F2C for J3. We will keep documentation, forum etc. online and try answer questions as soon as possible.

Anyone who wants to continue with Form2Content is welcome to do so. Just to be clear, regardless of budget (money raised etc.) we simply don't have the time to create a J4 version ourselves.

Hi,

I’m sorry to read this bad news. I love F2C and have used it for many websites (incl. complex directories, real estate websites etc.) - my clients say it’s so comfortable for them to edit the websites via forms. And for me it was like playing with Lego. Once I tried Content Builder + Breezing Forms - it was a nevermore experience :D

I just read this and I am very sorry if development would stop.
I use Form2Content Pro on multiple websites.
It works very inventively for end customers.
I hope development will continue anyway.
