Hi guys!

I have a problem with my F2C installation that has been bugging me for months (maybe since the initial install, I'm not sure as I was mostly focused on template development). However, until now I had always attributed it to my messy test install of Joomla which I did a lot of experiments on.

Problem: In the backend, in the F2C Article manager, when I open an article, edit it and save&close, I'm being redirected to a blank page. I need to use the browser's back button to get back to the article list, my edits have been applied. When I select one or several articles from the list and click "trash", I'm being redirected to a blank page, the article does not get trashed.

Furthermore my problem from a separate posting (blank page instead of intended redirect after frontend submission) remains and may or may not be related to this.

As I said, I've attributed the problem to my messy installation so far, but now I set up a fresh install (meant for production) at a different hosting provider and the problem remains the same.

Versions used:
F2C 6.17.4 in both installations
Joomla 3.9.11 and Joomla 3.9.10

I added login data to this posting as I guess you won't be able to help without it and I made a backup, so feel free to experiment if necessary.

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,
Sebastian

One addition:

I noticed, that editing an F2C article in the backend (tried in the new, fresh webspace) does not lead to changes in the corresponding joomla article but rather a new article with the same title is created, which happens after every edit&save (leading to aliases like "articlename2222222" as with every new version a "2" is added automatically. Frustrating. :(

Hi Sebastian,

This sounds like an old issue that has been resolved a long time ago. I have a feeling that there is something else going on since your issues haven't been reported by anyone and this release has been stable for a long time. Can you give a bit more info about your server setup?

Regards,
Patrick

Hi again!

I was able to narrow down the problem in a way that I wouldn't have thought of before. It was reproducible on another fresh install with nothing but Joomla and F2C in the most current version installed. However, it was reproducible only with my imported content type, not with the sample data provided by F2C. The reason seems to be my form template which - I have to admit - I heavily modified in a way that was certainly not intended by you. I was not aware that the form template somehow affects backend submission/editing as well and even when "Use Submission Form Template" is set to "no", otherwise I'd have considered this reason earlier.

When I remove the form template from the content type export file before importing it in the fresh install, everything works fine. So I'm going to start from scratch with my form template and see if everything works out.

Best wishes,
Sebastian

Edit: Mhh, when I re-add my form template later on everything still seems to work... guess I'll need a little more testing, but somehow the problem revolves around my form template.

Okay guys, i figure I still need your help as I'm unable to get to the core of the problem. Things I'm certain of so far:

  1. The problem ist somehow related to my templates.
  2. It is (different from what I thought before) not related to the submission form template.

Things I tried so far:

  1. recreated my entire content type (without importing anything from the previous one) in a test installation without creating any custom templates. Then I exported it.
  2. deleted the previous content type, all templates and every F2C piece of content on my (to-be) production server and
  3. imported the newly created content type onto that server
  4. created empty main- and intro-templates and let F2C create a default submission form template

Result: Creating articles from both back- and frontend works fine, no "blank page" problem.
Then I added the content of my previous main template to the so far empty main template.

The confusing result:

  1. first submission from BACKend works
  2. first submission from FRONTend works
  3. next submission from backend fails (content is submitted but I'm redirected to a blank page)
  4. all of the following submissions fail alike
  5. so I again delete the entire content of my main template
  6. first submission attempt from backend still fails (?)
  7. second submission attempt from backend works
  8. frontend submission works as well

If you'd like to reproduce the behaviour, use the login data provided in the details, then

  1. check in template manager that main_template_datenbankeintrag.tpl has content (I added it without adding any F2C articles afterwards)
  2. try to create F2C articles from both backend and frontend (menu item: "Vortrag hochladen" ) - I expect the first of each attempts to be successful, following attempts to fail
  3. delete content of main_template_datenbankeintrag.tpl (don't worry, I have a backup)
  4. try to create F2C articles from both backend and frontend - I expect the first attempt to fail, following attempts to be successful

Just to be clear: "fail" means that I am redirected to a blank page - the content is submitted correctly. You should also try to trash the created F2C articles - it doesn't work as long as the template has my content (redirect to blank but also the trashing doesn't happen here).

I'd really appreciate your help!

Thanks and best regards,
Sebastian

Frankly, I'm a little frustrated. I have invested a lot of my free time during the last six months developing F2C templates for my project. I'm not a professional, so many problems took me a while to solve, but that's okay and was expected. The problem mentioned in my previous posts however does render F2C (in its current state) useless to me. Being able to reliably save, edit and delete articles is a basic functionality that I cannot work without.
Sure, the problem somehow is related to my template and not a wide-spread problem of other users, but on the other hand the template's output is fine and F2C gives no error when saving the template.
I currently see no way how to solve that problem on my own. My F2C pro subscription expires in little more than two weeks. It would be very sad to give up half a year of development, but all the features I loved when getting to know F2C can't compensate not being able to perform basic article operations.

I've tried to narrow down the problem as far as I could and provided the necessary information to reproduce it. If you can, please support me in finding a solution or let me know if you need additional information. Thanks!

Best regards,
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Can you send us an admin account to info at opensourcedesign dot nl? I will have a look as we can't reproduce the issues and haven't had these issue from other users.

Patrick

Hi Sebastian,

I have logged in with the credentials you send me. I created a Joomla article using F2C. I re-saved several times and all without any issue or blank pages....
I did notice some small things:

  • A database lookup field with a query that doesn't give any results
  • Some unclosed html tags in your template (I checked the generated article via the Joomla Article Manager)

TEST TWO
I got blank pages.... Asked Julien to have a look too.

Regards,
Patrick

Just a short summary if anyone else ever encounters this problem: As Julien has figured out, it was caused by a PHP script that I had included in my article template. I can't tell the exact problem yet, but removal of the script solved the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,
Sebastian
